Kings Heathrow Taxi

Late-night arrivals · long-haul jet lag

Landing late, jet-lagged, and getting home.

Most transport options from Heathrow shrink or get expensive after 22:00 — a pre-booked taxi is the one that doesn't. Here's what actually changes overnight, and how to plan around it.

What transport is available from Heathrow after midnight?

Very little that runs on a normal schedule. Trains and most coach services stop late at night and don't resume until early morning — the Airline coach to Oxford, for example, drops to an hourly overnight service after its 23:30 last daytime departure. A pre-booked taxi is the one option built to run at any hour, at the same fixed fare as a daytime booking.

Why does Uber cost more late at night?

Driver supply drops overnight while long-haul arrival demand spikes. Most international long-haul flights land in the small hours, right when most Uber drivers have gone home. The surge algorithm raises prices to coax the remaining drivers into accepting jobs, which is exactly when you're least able to shop around or wait it out.

Long-distance routes make it worse: past roughly 60 miles from London, drivers have little incentive to accept a job after 22:00 since they'd return to the city empty. See Heathrow taxi vs Uber compared for the full mechanics.

How does a pre-booked taxi handle a very early or late landing?

The driver tracks your flight number, so a delayed landing at 2am instead of a scheduled 11pm doesn't need a call from you to explain what's happened. The pickup time adjusts automatically and the fare agreed at booking stays the fare you pay. Free wait time is 60 minutes from the scheduled pickup.

Does jet lag affect which terminal I land at?

No, but it affects how much you want to deal with once you land. Terminal walk times, immigration queues and the walk to a pickup point all feel longer running on no sleep — part of why it's worth removing "which transport option, and will it still be running" from the list of decisions you have to make after a long-haul flight.

For terminal-specific pickup logistics, see the Heathrow to Oxford page, which covers the same "call us when you've landed, we come round" procedure used across all four terminals.

Practical tips for coping with jet lag after landing

Get daylight as soon as you can if it's daytime at your destination, and avoid a long nap before your local evening. If you're landing very late at night, going straight to bed rather than trying to push through generally helps more than fighting it in the car.
