Two M1 exits serve Luton: J10 is signed for London Luton Airport (LTN), and J11 drops you into the town centre for the university, the hospital and The Mall. The last mile to the LTN terminal along Airport Way sees heavy taxi and coach traffic, so we allow around 10 minutes from J10 to the terminal drop-off. Weekday rush hours on the M25 and M1 (roughly 06:30 to 09:00 and 15:30 to 18:30) add 20 to 30 minutes, and the M25 stretch near the M40 and M1 junctions is the usual pinch point on a Friday evening. Because this is a common airport-to-airport connection with a fixed check-in cut-off at LTN, we build that buffer in rather than leave it to the raw drive time.

The train involves changing at least twice, usually a Heathrow rail link into London and then Thameslink out to Luton, which is slower with luggage.
